Read/Listen to these Blogs/Podcasts throughout the summer. Be prepared to discuss how technology affects your life.
Your first "official" assignment is to find the ITGS course guide from IBO and figure why I titled the blog, "Open the Pod Bay Doors, HAL."
Re: Your assignment
ReplyDeleteThe quote "Open the pod bay doors, HAL" is from the film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. The plot in the film involves a highly intelligent computer named HAL. One of the primary conflicts in the film involves the computer having greater control over the fate of the crew than even the living crew has, and HAL kills off some of the members on-board.
So - in the context of ITGS, the movie is analyzing the relationship between people and the technology around them. As the ITGS course guide points out, we're going to be examining the "ethical considerations arising from the widespread use of IT for individuals" and other organizations. The "social impacts" of technology will be examined in ITGS -- of course, HAL serving as a radical example of the possible impact of highly intelligent technology's impact on human existence.
(Yes, I did need to do a little internet research because I haven't seen the movie, but I figured that's about what you're looking for. Hope it was okay to post the answer here...?)

Also, quick question -- when we're going back and reading old blog posts and such, is there a certain date you'd like us to read back to?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Lold when I saw that ^
ReplyDeleteKara's essentially correct, but there's more to it than that and it does help if you've seen the film to zero in on the specific quote. The email I sent out on the 15th addresses the reading old posts issue. (Read 'em all.)
